Have you ever watched the child’s eyes lighten up when they finally crack a code for a brand new word? Like watching magic happen. This is what we do in reading class www.brightlyreading.com/ – sprinkling literary pixiedust to young minds and seeing them soar. Our reading class is more than a simple book club. It’s an adventure that takes us through the pages.
Imagine: a room buzzing with energy as children gather around books in hand and are ready to enter another world. We have knights battling with dragons, astronauts flying through space and detectives solving perplexing puzzles. Each session is like an odyssey, where words fly off the paper and dance within our imaginations.
But let’s not be naive for a while. Teach kids to read doesn’t have to be rainbows and butterflies. It can feel like herding cats or trying to catch lightening in a jar. Some days you feel like you’re wading through molasses, and others it feels like a smooth sail. It is those breakthrough moments–the “aha!” occasions–that make the whole thing worthwhile.
The question is, how do we keep them engaged and not turn them into book-zombies or zen-outers? The secret sauce is? Variety! We’re more like a DJ than a party. On one day, it’s silly storytime. The next we dive deep into poetry.
We can’t forget about games. Our secret weapon against boredom is games. Word scavenger-hunts or spelling bees with a buzz of energy can make learning less of a chore, and more of a thrilling quest.
This is perfectly fine. Each child learns at a different pace. Some kids are sprinters; others enjoy taking their sweet time to stroll down the path of reading. This is more than just okay, it’s great! The key is to embrace the differences because one size does not fit all.
Remember when you was a kid and your teachers gave you gold star for doing good work? Now, we have taken the idea to another level! We recognize every victory, no matter how small. Even if you’re just finishing your first chapter book or mastering a difficult word.
Emma is an incredibly bright girl with a big smile who, at one time, thought that books were her archenemy. Now she devours them as fast as cookies during Christmas! She began reluctantly but quickly found her groove once she came across stories about magical creatures, which are her absolute favorites. In her free time, she now writes her own tales!
Jake, a reluctant explorer who was hooked by graphic novels featuring superheroes on the front page.
In our adventure reading class, imagination has no limits. We can build castles of words on mountains created by ideas. And we can ride waves crafted out of sentences that are flowing endlessly over oceans far beyond measurement.
So, come on fellow travelers – grab your maps marked with unexplored chapters – and join us for a journey where stories grow thrive in laughter, joy, discovery and surprise. Each page is waiting eagerly to be read.
